A former journalist, he was based in Moscow, London, Frankfurt, and New York with assignments from Afghanistan to Venezuela. As a Eurovision editor he coordinated coverage across the globe. Often on assignment, he covered wars in the former Yugoslavia, Sudan, the Israeli-Arab conflict and others. He worked on civic diplomacy between the Soviet Union and the United States in the late 80s and founded the Moscow Bureau of Worldwide Television News (Associated Press TV today) in 1990. He went on to cover the collapse of the USSR.
