The Chess Experience

The Chess Experience
Chess improvement as an adult is harder than it should be. Plus, the journey can sometimes feel too stressful and serious. This show aims to fix that by 1) interviewing experts who can offer clarity on the best ways to improve; and 2) giving you a heap of fun with “chess entertainment” shows that discuss chess culture, events, movies, etc. Most episodes feature a guest, but sometimes I'll do a solo show on a topic. This is all brought to you by me, Daniel Lona. I’m a dedicated chess amateur and the owner of Adult Chess Academy. After listening to this podcast, I want you to have a clearer idea of how to improve, and have a more fun, dynamic chess experience. Please follow the show so you don’t miss an episode!

Namely, the outages, but that alone wasn't terrible, until you added update failures that prevent folks that needed to from patching themselves against Copy Fail! Some good things, too, though. PS5 Linux is bringing all the nostalgia back from the PS3 era of full Linux desktop enjoyment. Then, we let a guest, Nate Graham of KDE, crash the back half of the show, and it goes quite long! In the first half we hear everything from why Snaps could, but ultimately don't work for KDE Linux, Printing, and the possible future cadence of the OS once there's a full release (and more, of course). We actually split the interview in two to be a little more digestible and postable later on. In the second half of the interview, we discuss our thoughts on AI, what's good (and mostly bad) about it all, and how KDE and Nate look at submissions and humanity. What we don't need, it seems, is unenforceable policies. Then, a couple final questions like what's up with Full Disk Encryption? Let us know if this type of thing is what you'd like to hear more of. 📣Announcements📣 This program was made possible by: 📺️Youtube 📽️TILvids And by contributions to your L-U-S station by Patrons like you 😍 Go to our Links 🔗 Page for more places to find us Ubuntu's Ups and Downs Ubuntu's AI Ambitions Ubuntu's DDoS Discourse Post about the DDoS PS5-Linux (based on Ubuntu) 📣More Announcements📣 Want to have a topic covered or have some feedback? - send us an email, contact@linuxuserspace.show OR jump on over to the open forum on Lemmy Go to our Links 🔗 Page for more places to find us Interview With Nate Graham Nate's Blog KDE Linux KDE Linux Wiki KDE Discuss KDE Linux Matrix KDE Bug Tracker This Week In Plasma 🧹Housekeeping🧹 Catch these and other great topics as they unfold on our Subreddit or our News channel on Discord. On paper, it's as good as the Mac unified memory, but will it actually live up to the hype on the new Intel chips? Then, we find out Malus is out here copying open source software and adjusting it enough that it becomes... liberated? Described as 'satire,' this tool, at least on its surface, does seem to do exactly what it says on the tin. But why? And finally, we spend a lot of time talking about Ubuntu 26.04's release, and it turns out, some of the highlights are really interesting. Password feedback lets us meander into a much longer security debate about shoulder surfing, why TPM's and encryption are good, actually, the Gnome Resources app, which is surprisingly good, but we forgot to remember about it, and then we try to figure out when the right time to update really is. 📣Announcements📣 This program was made possible by: 📺️Youtube 📽️TILvids And by contributions to your L-U-S station by Patrons like you 😍 Go to our Links 🔗 Page for more places to find us LPCAMM2 Memory is gaining traction LPCAMM2 memory Nextgen Framework Framework 13 configurator More of this will help the RAM situation 📣More Announcements📣 Want to have a topic covered or have some feedback? - send us an email, contact@linuxuserspace.show OR jump on over to the open forum on Lemmy Go to our Links 🔗 Page for more places to find us Open Source can be magicked into Closed Source without Violating Copyright (Left) Malus archive.today link to 404 Media article But shouldn't it be Public Domain? 🧹Housekeeping🧹 Catch these and other great topics as they unfold on our Subreddit or our News channel on Discord. Luckily the very first Pentium (with MMX!) is still in-tree, but for how much longer? We also find out that Ubuntu is raising their minimum RAM requirement to 6GB from 4. Honestly, it's about time. Then, some bittersweet news. Leo finally gets to play around with the Firefox built-in VPN, but Dan still hasn't seen it. What we found out, though, is that Firefox will happily leak your real IP address with WebRTC. Does this defeat the purpose?! Lastly, we try to guess what's going to happen next with RAM prices. They seem to have hit their peak, but will they really come tumbling down? At least for Raspberry Pi, that's not the case as price rises across the entire line are happening. The Pi 5 16GB is a jaw dropping $300! We also respond to a couple of comments. Take a peek, preferably after they update their expired certificate (they seriously did this to us after we speak so highly!) and get a slightly more honest look at your speeds! For bonus points, try a different country. We also dig into some of the technical bits behind those tests. Also, when speaking about jitter, I should have said 'delta' or 'difference' rather than 'average'! Then, more age verification. This time, though, Linux distributions are caught in the crossfire and some are exploring the ways to actually handle potential implementations. Nothing's too dire yet as most of these 'laws' are still bills, and that means they don't matter quite yet. Also, we look into a post by Gabriele Svelto, a Firefox developer, to find out that not only is Firefox a little more reliable than you might think, bad RAM or other hardware bits might actually be the reason things are crashing, and not just Firefox! And it'd be going a lot better if Leo could stop weighing the pros and cons of each search and their impact on the quota. Also, a little about Orion and why its tabbed layout is much better than the rest. Then, F-Droid is back in the news with a new lament about the dwindling amount of time left before the September Sideload cutoff. Time to make a little more noise, it seems. And finally, Firefox gets the long awaited Kill Switch, but was it actually backtracking? We make the case for why that might not have actually been the case, but welcome the toggle either way. Episode 6:06: The Epic Epoch

December 22, 2025 1:38:44 72.13 MB Downloads: 0

In this episode we spend a lot of time hyping things up, including some things you might not expect (from a Linux show, not so much Leo). We open up with Zorin making some money moves that helps WinBoat among a few other projects, then really dive into the show with Cosmic! A bit about how we've fared now that the 1.0 Cosmic Epoch is here, how things have changed, and what other goodies System76 has up their sleeve (it's a lot!). Then, we spend some time dissecting Mozilla's newest AI move. It turns out, if you dig deep enough, there's still hope, contrary to the wildly hot-take style news about things so far. And our final topic, Snapscope, a way to scan your Snaps for vulnerabilities, but then end up chatting way more about Snaps in general. There's also a bit of SteamThing errata we need to cover before ending it all on a high note for the holidays. Hope you enjoy and we'll see you soon. Happy holidays! Episode 6:05: Plasma is the Way-Land

Coming up in this episode * Wayland is inevitable... * RAM is now Unobtanium * and a Linux User Space OS? Today in User Space, we RE-remind everyone that Wayland is certainly the only way forward for the big dogs. Gnome had adopted a Wayland-only stance quite a while ago, and now it looks like Plasma will be following suit. Then, we dive into the wonderful world of Everything terrible that AI is doing to us in the form of RAM price hikes (as much as 500%... so far). And finally, we hit up the feedback that's been piling up! There's a little more to get to eventually, but it'll all get there since we went a little long in this episode. 0:00 Cold Open 1:05 Wayland Is Inevitable... 26:53 RAM Is Now Unobtanium 49:54 The LUS Mailbag 50:19 Mailbag: Daniel 57:40 Mailbag: schemage2210 1:03:19 Mailbag: ewanmarshall 1:10:13 Mailbag: michaelchalmers 1:15:26 Next Time 1:23:08 Stinger The Video Version (https://youtu.be/dyfMTBn7AoM) https://youtu.be/dyfMTBn7AoM 📣Announcements📣 This program was made possible by: * 📺️Youtube (https://youtube.com/linuxuserspace) * 📽️TILvids (https://tilvids.com/a/linuxuserspace) * And by contributions to your L-U-S station by Patrons (https://patreon.com/linuxuserspace) like you 😍 Plasma is all in on Wayland KDE blog post (https://blogs.kde.org/2025/11/26/going-all-in-on-a-wayland-future/) We shouted back in 2023 on Season 4 Episode 5 (https://www.linuxuserspace.show/405) The Steam Deck which runs on KDE Plasma has high sales numbers (https://www.techspot.com/news/106921-handheld-gaming-pcs-surpass-6-million-sales-steam.html) 📣More Announcements📣 Want to have a topic covered or have some feedback? - send us an email, contact@linuxuserspace.show OR jump on over to the open forum on Lemmy (https://lemmy.linuxuserspace.show/c/forum) RAM prices are silly. Episode 6:02B: The Cosmic B-Side

October 20, 2025 2:03:18 89.16 MB Downloads: 0

This past week, as we were gearing up to record an episode, life had to just get in the way. We had a little wiggle room mid-week, so we decided to get something on tape anyway. Just something a little less structured. And so, this B-side was born. The object of the game was to dive deep into Cosmic, the first "reference implementation" in our two desktop series (Cosmic and Plasma) and give you honest opinion, good and bad, as we experienced it on livestream... for two hours. Of course there are tangents, because, well, it's still us. The desktop is quite amazing for something that's only (publicly) existed for a little over a year. We poke almost everything that comes with the default install of Pop_OS! 24.04. We'll poke the rest over the next few weeks. We're interested to hear what you think, especially on the audio version. We tried to describe everything we saw as we went because obviously, you can't see, but surely there's room to improve. If you're curious, the video to go with all this is at: https://youtu.be/RwGZiMTtaoI The audio comes from a few odd sources, so things might not sound normal. Still turned out quite well, overall, but at 1:45:20, we lose Dan's voice. I know, I know, we should have had a backup. We usually have three! But the on-the-flyness of the recording kept us from remembering to even bring in the backup-backup. Either way, sorry about that! It's just Leo at that point, so bear with. We know it's not a normal episode, but we still hope you enjoy!
