It’s been quite a while since the last international interview on the podcast. But today’s is very, very special. You might have heard me mention my “go-to” Irish economist before... well, he is my guest today: David McWilliams.
David isn’t your typical academic economist hiding behind complex formulas or impenetrable jargon. Quite the opposite. He is a professor and has worked at the Irish Central Bank and in investment banking, but above all, he is an exceptional communicator. He’s the author of several bestsellers and the host of one of my absolute favorite podcasts, The David McWilliams Podcast, where he proves that economics is nothing more—and nothing less—than the story of how we humans interact with one another.
In this chat, we discuss Ireland’s evolution and Europe’s apparent paralysis. We dive into his latest book, Money: A Story of Humanity, and explore money as a revolutionary social technology. We also talk about James Joyce, fiction, the eternal debate between generalists and specialists, and even an Irish band inspired by Dante.
