That’s what high performance is to me, the ability to adapt rapidly so you can achieve your potential. There are five key pillars to creating the conditions for adaptability: sleep, exercise, mental resilience, nutrition, and community/relationships.” - Dr Erik Korem “I maybe have a different concept on leadership. To me, leading is a verb. If you’re leading, you’re a leader. If you’re swimming you’re a swimmer, if you’re driving you’re a driver. If you’re leading you’re by definition a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to make a decision or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. All rank and role really describe is how many people are hoping you get it right when it’s your turn to wear the weight.” - Clint Bruce

You're absolutely right. The tools we use to communicate have changed. The human brain has not. The better you understand how people process information. The more persuasive, the more successful you'll be at communicating your ideas.” 14:43: “Storytelling is what separated our species and make it, and made us that dominant. Stories inform, they illuminate, they inspire. So you're suggesting the tools have changed. Absolutely. We have different ways of reaching people, but they are still connected to one another through the power of story. So you still have to be a good storyteller story.” 25:55: “We're all storytellers. You are the storyteller-in-chief for your household brand. You're the household CEO, but you are the storyteller in chief. No one else is going to be able to tell that story as well as you. So think of yourself not as giving a presentation, not as giving a pitch, not as taking a meeting, but as telling a story. And you'll find that your content and the way you express yourself will change based on the way you've reframed the way you see yourself.” 27:45: “So there's a lot, there's a lot to learn about storytelling, but start paying attention and see yourself as a storyteller and not a presenter.” ABOUT THE BLUEPRINT PODCAST: The BluePrint Podcast is for busy professionals and Household CEOs who care deeply about their families, career, and health. It also functions to shut down inflammation in the brain and in the body. And to elevate the protection of the brain.” 43:34 “Andrew didn't have depression before he woke up with it and people said, oh, you've now become a depressive person. They didn't put the two and two together that way. Maybe something in your past has created the change in the chemistry that's presented as depression.” 1:00:38 “And we talk about it in terms of biological resiliency. Why is it that some of the people that were exposed to the same traumas that Andrew was, did not develop the extent of injuries he did, or the people who developed it instead of six months in one month, two months, or three months? It's called biological resiliency.” 1:01:32 “Exercise helps to increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which protects the brain, you know, so it's, it's not just looking at hormones and it's not just about peptides, it's about the entire lifestyle.” ABOUT THE BLUEPRINT PODCAST: The BluePrint Podcast is for busy professionals and Household CEOs who care deeply about their families, career, and health. And that narrative, that writing that happens is our self-talk, or what do we say to ourselves? And some research shows that we have about 66,000 independent thoughts in a day.” 17:11 “So if you think about our thoughts, they're constantly flowing like a river. Think about the undercurrent of our subconscious thoughts and 90% of how we think. It's subconscious. We're not aware of it. 10% of those thoughts are on the surface. So how do those thoughts manifest in our own conscious minds? Well, it's the self-taught piece, right? 17:30 “If we can understand how we talk to ourselves, and we understand that some studies show that 80% of our self-talk is negative, that becomes a self-fulfilling process. So you think about if I have negative self-talk, I'm essentially undermining everything that I do.” 19:45 “If you're aware of your thoughts, you then are more likely to then be able to change what your thoughts are.” 28:42 “But if you're intentionally repping out that self-talk, that again, moves things from the conscious to the subconscious, right? So now when I'm responding to situations where I don't have time to think, now I've changed the neural structure in terms of what my response and what my talk is, and that narrative will affect change. But the only way you can change those neural pathways is through deliberate practice.” ABOUT THE BLUEPRINT PODCAST: The BluePrint Podcast is for busy professionals and Household CEOs who care deeply about their families, career, and health. The first thing he said is, Carmine, you've gotta dig into those shareholder letters. He said, those letters should be taught to every business student in the country. And then he added, if I were 20 years younger, I'd teach the class myself.” 3:08 “Writing and communication is a skill. And like any skill. You can sharpen it with time. It can be developed over time. So I like to say that great communicators are made not born. Like any skill, you can improve. Jeff Bezos certainly did. If you look at the first 10 years of letters that he wrote about Amazon, they kind of scored around a 10th-grade level, some college level, so they were a little confusing, but they had some really great words of wisdom.” 4:20 “Whether it's writing, public speaking, giving presentations, anything that has to do with leadership and communication, we can all get better at it. We can all improve.” 6:08 “Use short words to talk about hard things. As Amazon grew in complexity, as Amazon added more than a million employees and got into cloud computing and artificial intelligence, the writing that Bezos did grew shorter and simpler.” 8:33 “Because we're overthinking it. We have to sound smart. Well, that, I guess means using longer words. And yet the counterintuitive secret of success is the more confident you are and the better you understand a concept, you're more likely to simplify it for your audience. It's counterintuitive, but I think it's a very powerful concept that anyone can use.” ABOUT THE BLUEPRINT PODCAST: The BluePrint Podcast is for busy professionals and Household CEOs who care deeply about their families, career, and health. Okay, that's a bunch of psycho-babble. So let's get a practical street definition. Mental toughness is getting the most out of what you have to be at your best when it matters the most.” 01:16 “The four Cs of mental toughness are confidence, control, commitment, and challenge. And there's two-step factors for each of those. There's actually a valid and reliable psychometric tool that I use in my athletes, business leaders, and people in healthcare. So those four Cs are really the four elements that make up your mental toughness profile. 03:46 “Mental toughness is a combination of playing psychological defense, which is resilience and mental performance with psychological offense. You bring those together, you get a really good championship combination.” 5:36 “The first step of being a better thermostat is the thermometer, which is self-awareness and you also have to be aware of outside of myself, which is my environment and other people and how they affect me. So it's inside out and outside in terms of my ability to be able to read myself. My internal temperature and the temperature outside of myself.” 7:22 “We haven't developed the coping skills over and allowed our kids to then be able to make mistakes and learn and experiment and fail. Or I'm really focused on like scaling what I do and impacting as many people as possible.” 29:53 “I think the key is to stay locked in on the things that are lined up with your purpose, these meaningful goals that matter to you and sort of chipping away at it, right? Like, and if you feel yourself going down that path where you're making progress, you're gonna feel greater intrinsic motivation.” 37:33 “[Goals] are more about tapping into what would actually motivate you to become this person? Because chances are just changing the body composition by itself is probably not that motivating, because it's not super intimately, at least yet linked to your larger purpose.” ABOUT THE BLUEPRINT PODCAST: The BluePrint Podcast is for busy professionals and Household CEOs who care deeply about their families, career, and health. I went vegan for a month. I've really tried everything just to see, but it all kind of comes back to where I'm at now of eating either more than you're burning or less than you're burning and figuring out how to, you know, adjust things from there.” 7:04 “If you wanna lose weight, there has to be a restriction of some sort. And you can restrict calories in a lot of ways. You could be vegan and overeat and gain weight. You can be a carnivore and overeat and gain weight.” 11:16 “You can spend the first 23 years, which is what I did of my life with a certain identity, and it doesn't, even after five years, it doesn't just flip the switch, right? 12:01 “I think you have to stack evidence and prove it to yourself. And so I'm still in that process, but like at the top of that document is, hasn't missed a strength training workout in two years. So I think that's proving to myself.” ABOUT THE BLUEPRINT PODCAST: The BluePrint Podcast is for busy professionals and Household CEOs who care deeply about their families, career, and health. Strength in the Struggle: How You Can Use Challenges To Succeed with Susan Sly
Susan Sly is an entrepreneur, business owner, tech investor, best-selling author, and former professional athlete. She has built sales teams that have generated over $2 billion. However, she has faced many challenges in her life, including homelessness, a divorce, and being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). Despite her struggles, Susan's resilience, faith, and determination have helped her overcome her challenges and empower others by first empowering herself. Her story is one you don't want to miss. Episode 1 Quotable moments: 5:56: “My family falls apart, I get diagnosed with a terminal illness, and I lose my business and end up homeless on my brother-in-law's sofa as a single mom in a 16-week span. And I got down on my knees and I said, God if you will show me the way I will do the work.” 11:53: “And I looked in the mirror and I took a hundred percent responsibility because I gave myself MS. I got myself into that situation. I, you know, love, love, love with all my heart, my ex-husband. I wouldn’t have a cell in my body that blames him for anything but I took myself to that situation.” 17:20: “The root of all anger is disappointment. And then I challenge myself with that athletic mindset. Like, oh, okay, how can I shorten this to, I'm just gonna be like having the wall-kicking moment for a day. Or can I shorten it to an hour? Can I shorten it to five minutes? And then what? Who do I need to be to say, okay, this happened. I'm over it. I'm moving on.” 19:03: “No one can take away our ability to feel grateful. No one can take away our ability to feel faith. We can only give those things away and we can trade down for less value, but we're never going to live into our own value if we're always trading down.” ABOUT THE BLUEPRINT PODCAST: The BluePrint Podcast is for busy professionals and Household CEOs who care deeply about their families, career, and health. Dr. Alex Auerbach, Senior Director of Wellness and Development for the Toronto Raptors and coach to elite athletes from the NBA, NFL, MLB, and the Olympics, as well as Fortune 5 companies, presents a new episode on how to lead yourself. In this episode, Alex reveals a proven framework for leading yourself towards optimal health and achieving your goals. He emphasizes the importance of leading yourself first through self-regulation, planning, preparation, and managing any situation based on tools, context, and feedback. These essential life strategies provide feedback from our environment and body, allowing us to adjust accordingly and evaluate scenarios critically, ultimately improving our decision-making skills. Check out Alex’s podcast & newsletter Unfair Advantage Learn more about Alex’s course Sign up for Erik’s weekly newsletter - Adaptation Join the AIM7 Beta Community Episode 2 Quotable Moments: 12:24 “I think [leading ourselves] really boils down to me to self-regulation. And that means is really two things. One, it means being able to kind of manage, direct, or control your thinking, feeling, and physiology, and as a result. And then two is to optimize how much you learn so that you can better execute the skills that you have on a regular basis.” 14:02 “Lead yourself first into the best, highest performer I can possibly be, so that I can give out everything I have to give to the world around me. That to me, is like true servant leadership. It's not, let me pick up everything for you.” 18:04 “Ultimately, like that's what high performance is. It's knowing what skills to use in what context, and so without context sensitivity, you're not gonna know what skills to use. You can't lead yourself first.” 19:19 “To me, that's what leading yourself is, right? It's about knowing like, how do I be the best me that I can be in each moment. And that involves reading the room essentially, right? Knowing yourself and then adjusting to the feedback from both places.” ABOUT THE BLUEPRINT PODCAST: The BluePrint Podcast is for busy professionals and Household CEOs who care deeply about their families, career, and health. That is maybe 10 minutes from now. Drop it on the floor and forget it, and just focus on the problem at hand until it becomes very easy.” 07:06 “I think the application here is you know, breaking down, a problem or a trajectory into its component parts and then figuring out what are the things I have to work. What are the assumptions that I am making? And then your daily goal or the things that you commit yourself to are as simple as, well, is this moving me closer towards the thing that this is like, or is it moving me further away?” 15:45 “With the way that I kind of structure the business and the times that work is happening or a meeting is happening, I have to run a more efficient business to make it fit within the constraints that I have given it. Because otherwise, you will just expand the work time to fill the available time.” 16:39 “You better believe that when the forcing function is I sleep less. I'm gonna figure that out really darn quick, right? Because I'm putting pain back on myself and shouldering in a way that, that, that forces me to recalibrate.” ABOUT THE BLUEPRINT PODCAST: The BluePrint Podcast is for busy professionals and Household CEOs who care deeply about their families, career, and health. This typically works for people who have been restricting so severely for so long that they're both psychologically and physically depressed from this prolonged dieting process to the degree that when you add calories to their diet, then they're able to improve mood and non-exercise activity, if even at a subconscious level.” 39:09 ”And by building new habits, I mean, not just the better food selection and a better sense of how much to take in on a regular basis. Not just those habits, the program habits, but also a better set of habits, that are in the realm of managing and dealing with deviations in, in the program.” 42:30 “Because at least in theory, if you lose a lot of lean mass along with fat mass, then the body senses this, and then you'll have higher hunger levels by the time you, you're at the end of the weight loss rainbow.” ABOUT THE BLUEPRINT PODCAST: The BluePrint Podcast is for busy professionals and Household CEOs who care deeply about their families, career, and health.
