Eating As If the World Depended On It
Now more than ever we should be eating as if the world depended on it, because it does. On this episode of The Exam Room™ podcast, Dr. David Katz, a preventative medicine specialist and author of How To Eat, joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll to weigh the magnitude of our food choices on everything from the environment to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Katz also shares his opinion on how differently the global pandemic would be playing out if doctors focused more on food and lifestyle rather than just treating the symptoms of chronic conditions. He and Chuck then discuss his time working in an overflowing New York City hospital during the height of the pandemic. Dr. Katz will be a featured speaker at the upcoming International Conference on Nutrition in Medicine. Plus, Dr. Neal Barnard talks about how your blood type can impact your risk of COVID-19. Should you change your eating habits if your blood is Type A rather than Type O? Less Meat, More Plants!
A report that may reshape nutrition advice given to millions of Americans will soon be discussed in Washington. It is the groundwork for the updated USDA Dietary Guidelines that are set to be released early next year. And one thing is clear — research shows the guidelines should call for less meat and more plants! On this episode of The Exam Room™ podcast, "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll is joined by dietitian Susan Levin to explore the recommendations that everyone eating a plant-based diet should be hoping for! They also look at the confusion surrounding some of the current guidelines and how they can be improved. The update currently being crafted by the USDA comes on the heels of the American Cancer Society’s new nutrition guidance which does not include red or processed meat, both of which have been tied to many forms of cancer. Likewise, Canada has deemphasized dairy in its latest nutrition guidelines because of cancer concerns. Will the US be the next country to take a healthy step toward a plant-based way of eating? Also on the show, Dr. Neal Barnard and Dr. Jim Loomis open up the Doctor’s Mailbag to answer your questions! Are canned beans as healthy as dried beans? Which is unhealthier: white meat or dark meat? Family History, Not Your Destiny: Taking Control of Your Health
Many of us are fearful that if a disease runs in the family we will get it and there is nothing that we can do. It’s as if our fate is already sealed. However, on this episode of The Exam Room™ podcast, "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll is joined by Jill Erickson and her husband Joel whose stories are proof that doesn’t have to be the case. Colon cancer runs deeply in Jill’s family — her mom, aunt, and cousin all had it. When it hit particularly close to home she turned to her husband, Joel, and said that she knew that she would die from it as well and that it was only a matter of time. Then something happened one Sunday afternoon. Armed with a big bowl of snacks and the tv remote, she sat down on the couch expecting to burn brain cells and get a few hours closer to an inescapable diagnosis. Instead, she stumbled across a certain documentary on Netflix and began learning about the benefits of a plant-based diet. Suddenly, she realized that her family history of cancer did not have to be her destiny. The importance of nutrition became even more paramount when Joel suffered a “widow maker” heart attack. That is when they pledged to take their plant-based lifestyle to a new level and have never looked back. They are now even teaching cooking classes and passing along what she has learned through their company Rooted Green Wellness and the Food For Life program. This is a story of love, triumph, health, and revelations. Plus, Dr. Neal Barnard answers a question from someone new to eating a vegan diet. They are worried that they won’t be able to get the same nutrients found in one particular non-plant-based food without abandoning their newly adopted way of eating. Can they still reap the benefits and keep it plant-based? Eating Like the Past Creates a Healthier Future
Could eating the diet of generations ago be the key to a healthier future? Nurse and certified Food For Life instructor Deitra Dennis, RN, CHC, joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room™ podcast to discuss the way that the plant-based foods featured on the African Heritage Power Plate can help people connect with their roots and creativity while living healthier lives. The rates of diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and other chronic conditions remain high among African Americans while life expectancies are lower. However, Deitra’s goal is to have members of the black community experience how returning to traditional foodways of their heritage can result in improved health. The inspiring conversation continues a broader discussion on the inequities and injustices facing the African American community. As Deitra says, she is a solutions person and is bringing plenty of ideas to the table to overcome some of the challenges facing the community. A healthier diet is not the only solution, but it can be one step toward improved health. — — — African Heritage Power Plate https://bit.ly/AfricanHPP — — — Back to the Root 2-Week Jumpstart Program https://bit.ly/B2RJumpstart — — — Farmers Market Coalition https://farmersmarketcoalition.org — — — Trio Plant-Based Restaurant https://www.trioplantbased.com — — — Chuck Carroll Twitter: @ChuckCarrollWLC IG: @ChuckCarrollWLC Facebook: https://wghtloss.cc/ChuckFacebook — — — Physicians Committee Twitter: @PCRM IG: @PhysiciansCommittee Facebook: https://wghtloss.cc/PCRMFacebook — — — Barnard Medical Center Telemedicine Schedule Appointment: https://bit.ly/BMCtelemed Share the Show Please subscribe and give the show a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or many other podcast providers. Racial Disparities and Health: The Challenges and How To Overcome Them
Dr. Neal Barnard opens the episode by sharing his thoughts on the scourge of racism in the United States. As an organization, we felt it would be inappropriate to ignore our communities, friends and neighbors at a time when they are hurting so desperately. As such, "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll revisits conversations with two leaders who explore the disparities facing African Americans, including a widening gap of health. Author Tracye McQuirter details the nutritional challenges facing the community that correlate to a socio-economic divide. Tracye also highlights the rich history of African Americans and plant-based diets and the 10,000 Black Vegan Women initiative.. Then, at a time when black Americans are being diagnosed with chronic health conditions at alarming rates higher than other races, Brooklyn borough president Eric Adams is defying the odds to chart his own course for a healthier life. Eric was beginning to lose his vision and experiencing nerve damage when he was diagnosed with diabetes. Despite the grim circumstances, he would not accept failing health and an early grave as his fate. Instead, he overhauled his diet and lifestyle to reverse his diabetes. Today, he is inspiring thousands to follow of others who feel trapped to follow in his footsteps and live the healthier life they’ve always imagined. Football Star to Plant-Based Sensation: The Gabriel Miller Story
Gabriel Miller dreamed of running onto the field Sunday afternoons in the fall as a player in the NFL. It seemed as though that dream was on the verge of coming true until a freak injury cut short his college football career. With one goal snatched away the 19-year-old set a new goal for himself, to be able to walk without the use of a walker. He was facing a lifetime of surgeries and debilitating pain unless he lost a significant amount of weight. There was only one problem. After gorging on the standard American diet for years (and then some) as a football player, he really had no clue how to do it. Then he had an epiphany. It was one word, really. Plants. On this episode of The Exam Room™ podcast, Gabriel joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll to share what led him down that healthier path that didn't include countless medical procedures and unrelenting pain. Although he may not have achieved riches in the NFL, he has found abundant prosperity by sharing his story and helping others overcome their own health obstacles. This is one remarkable conversation. Plus, Dr. Jasmol Sardana joins the show as Chuck opens up the Doctor's Mailbag to answer your health and nutrition questions. - Is it better to get too much sodium or too little? - Is orange juice actually healthy? - Are agave and maple syrup healthier than sugar? - Are there foods people with eczema should avoid? - What can be used for salad dressing that is low fat and vegan? Change What You Eat, Change Your Risk of Having a Stroke
Every 40 seconds someone in America will have a stroke. That adds up to 800,000 people every year. And of those, 140,000 will die. With those numbers, it’s no surprise that strokes rank among the top five leading causes of death in the U.S. But how many lives could be saved with diet and lifestyle changes? More than you would think! On this episode of The Exam Room™ podcast, Dr. Vanita Rahman joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll to discuss how steering clear of the high fat standard American diet can significantly improve your chances of never having a stroke. Also, Chuck is joined by a very special stroke survivor who shares how a trip to the gym eight years ago turned into a stay in the hospital and lengthy recovery. Julie Wright is a well known television personality in the Washington, DC area who was in the middle of training for an upcoming race when the stroke hit out of nowhere. She also happens to be Chuck’s wife. The incident turned her life upside down for months and forced her to closely examine what she was eating. However, she says food was never discussed by her doctors and it wasn’t until she began searching for healthier options on her own that she made the connection. Plus, Dr. Neal Barnard offers his advice to an Exam Room listener who recently adopted a plant-based diet and wanted some ideas about losing weight besides avoiding high fat nuts and seeds. Dr. Michael Greger: Nutrition Tips and Surviving a Pandemic
Dr. Michael Greger shares his wisdom for surviving a pandemic as he returns to The Exam Room™ for a conversation with “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll. It’s a discussion filled with nutrition tips and insight on how diet and lifestyle changes can reverse many of the underlying conditions that significantly increase the risk of COVID-19. They also preview Dr. Greger’s new book, How To Survive A Pandemic. To keep things interesting, Dr. Greger is walking on his treadmill during the interview, which is a first for The Exam Room. Their “walk and talk” was done during the virtual Fairfax Veg Fest. Plus, we open up The Doctor’s Mailbag as Dr. Neal Barnard and dietitian Karen Smith join Chuck to answer your questions! Is there a safe amount of vegetable oil to eat? How damaging is salt to your health? How can someone stop eating bread if they’re addicted to it? How can someone with vitamin D deficiency improve their levels? How could someone’s insulin levels rise but A1C remain normal? How can you help a migraine headache caused by hormones? What happens if someone eats meat from an animal or meat plant infected with COVID-19? And many more!
