Harley Quinn Smith: A Vegan To Watch

January 17, 2019 52:43 50.59 MB Downloads: 0

Harley Quinn Smith is a budding rock star, up and coming actress, animal welfare advocate and one seriously devoted vegan! She made national headlines recently after encouraging her father, director Kevin Smith, to adopt a plant-based diet following a near-fatal heart attack. Now, Harley Quinn joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll in the Hollywood Hills to reveal that he isn’t the only one in the family whom she inspired to go vegan! She also shares her own heartwarming story of how adopting a rescued rabbit changed her life and opened her own eyes to the compassion and health benefits that accompany a plant-based lifestyle. And she has some great advice for starting a conversation with friends and family who are skeptical about removing meat and dairy from their diet. Be sure to check out her band, The Tenth. They're releasing their debut album, Dunes, on February 10! Also on the show are two of the most motivating gentlemen you will ever meet. Dr. Cyrus Khambatta and Robby Barbaro work tirelessly to improve the lives of thousands that have been diagnosed with diabetes. But what makes them such beacons of hope is that their passion stems from their own experiences with the disease. Both were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at a young age. But rather than cower and let the disease dictate how they live their life, they seized control and refused to throw in the towel. Today, their enthusiasm and zest for life is contagious and it's impossible not to get fired up while listening to the way their helping people reclaim their health. Maggie Q: Why I'm Vegan

January 09, 2019 58:53 56.52 MB Downloads: 0

Maggie Q is a plant-based megastar! The talented actress, best known for starring in hit TV show Designated Survivor and the Insurgent movie series, joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll on location in Los Angeles to talk about keeping it plant-based in Hollywood. Her talents don’t end when the cameras stop rolling. Away from the set, she’s quite the extraordinary cook! The way her non-vegan dinner guests react to her plant-based dinners is uncanny and since she adopted a plant-based diet 20 years ago, it’s a long list of names who have walked away with blown minds to complement their full bellies. Maggie Q is also a devoted animal and human rights advocate. She shares with Chuck how it was those passions that led her to stop eating meat so long ago. Also, on the show, you’ll hear from someone at the forefront of the future of nutrition and medicine. Dr. Robin Ortiz brings her passion and infectious energy to The Exam Room™ to talk about her transformation from a (semi) rebellious teenager to a doctor with a keen eye for all things plant-based. She gives her thoughts on the lack of nutrition education in medical school and talks about being viewed as a “hippy doc” by her colleagues because of her diet. But Dr. Ortiz’s endless supply of optimism and an increasing amount research is proving that she’s on the right track. Best of 2018 - Part 2: Most Inspiring Stories

December 26, 2018 01:14:11 71.2 MB Downloads: 0

Join “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll as he revisits the most inspirational figures of 2018. After being diagnosed with diabetes, former star football player Marc Ramirez refused to accept the same fate that claimed the lives of two family members and crippled the bodies of others. He is proof that genetics are not destiny. Josh LaJaunie was more than 200 pounds overweight and felt trapped inside of a body that seemed destined for an early grave. But he was able to break free of his unhealthy prison and transform himself into an elite runner who now is inspiring thousands to lead healthier lives. The ageless mother-daughter duo of Tracye and Mary McQuirter are turning back the hands of time. Both are turning heads and freely boasting about their age. And you would too if you looked and felt 20 years younger than you actually are! After experiencing extreme pain in her breast, doctors discovered a lump in Lee Crosby’s breast. Barely 30 years old, she was terrified of becoming a statistic. But she beat back that fear and used her experience to create a bright future for herself as a highly sought-after dietician. Evan Bass struggled mightily with his weight. His short stature and large frame made him an easy target for cowardly critics with sharp tongues. He was frequently on the receiving end of cruel comments and cold stares while battling a severe food addiction. But what nobody knew, not even Evan, was that lying dormant inside of him was unparalleled willpower to turn his life around. He’s now a modern-day Rocky with a refuse to lose attitude.  All of them have one thing in common: they adopted to a plant-based diet. Plant-Based Thanksgiving Guide

In this special episode of The Exam Room™, “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll sits down to dinner with television news producer Justin Stewart, who has never eaten a plant-based meal in their life, let alone for Thanksgiving! We pulled out all the stops for this and had the food catered by Michael Moon of the Washington-based DC Vegan, who whipped up an out of this world feast of veganized classics! Will the plant-based mac and “cheese,” green bean casserole, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie be able to satisfy a skeptic? Let the games begin! Plus, surviving Thanksgiving can be tough for many who are plant-based. With only three percent of Americans identifying as vegan, there’s a good chance that somewhere at their table will be looking forward to turkey. Unfortunately, a relative or friend who doesn’t understand why anyone wouldn’t want to put the bird on the plate can come across as being pushy and overbearing. The pressure can be enough to make you want to pluck out your own hair.  We have some tips on how to not only cope with the pressure, to get the most stalwart turkey aficionados to take a closer look at the health benefits of a plant-based diet. Hopefully, this dialogue will lead to a more harmonious dinner and healthy conversation for dessert! Breast Cancer: Food, Prevention & Survival

October 24, 2018 01:22:49 79.5 MB Downloads: 0

Certain foods can not only help prevent breast cancer but can also dramatically improve the odds of survival once a person is diagnosed. Conversely, other foods have been proven to increase the risk of developing the disease. In this very special edition of The Exam Room™, “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll sits down with Dr. Neal Barnard to discover the foods that have strong cancer-fighting properties and which foods to avoid to keep the risk of developing the disease as low as possible. Dr. Barnard also shares how a recent flight got him to re-examine the way we view breast cancer awareness. It is critically important that we continue searching for a cure, but he says there should also be an increased emphasis on preventing the disease. Studies show that many of the nearly 41,000 estimated deaths in the U.S. in 2018 are preventable through diet and lifestyle changes. Also, Dr. Asha Subramanian returns to the program to discuss breast cancer from not just the perspective of a physician, but also from that of a woman and mother. Dr. Subramanian and Chuck then touch on how a plant-based diet can significantly lower the risk of developing breast cancer, even in women with a strong genetic link to the disease. The effects of  age, obesity, race, and animal fat is also examined. Apples! Healthy As Advertised?

October 17, 2018 44:58 43.15 MB Downloads: 0

An apple can be ideal snack when you’re trying to lose weight, but its health benefits go way beyond keeping a slim waist. In fact, apples are packed with tons of nutrients that can help improve your health and keep the doctor away. In this episode, “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll sits down with dietitian Susan Levin to discover everything that makes up an apple and how each of those vitamins and minerals can affect your health. We’re talking about everything from fiber to calcium to amino acids to vitamins A-K and the THREE forms of sugar found in apples! But what about that sugar? Doesn’t an apple have the same amount as a candy bar? Yes, but keep in mind comparing the two is like comparing … well, apples and candy bars. The way your body processes the natural sugar found in fruit and the refined sugar found in many candies is night and day. Fun fact: Apples contain the amino acid tryptophan which is commonly blamed for causing drowsiness after Thanksgiving dinner. How To Cook Without Oil

October 10, 2018 53:16 51.12 MB Downloads: 0

Cooking without oil is a new practice for many of us. Who hasn’t been taught to add a splash of it to the pan before turning on the stove? And what about adding a spoonful to boiling water when making pasta? Indeed, whether it’s olive, vegetable or any other type of oil, it just seems to be in every recipe in the book. Since all oils are high in fat (1 gram of fat has nine calories) can be a problem for those trying to lose weight and maintain their overall health. Research also shows oil poses a significant risk to diabetics as it interferes with insulin’s ability to move glucose into the cells. So, how can you cook without it?! “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll and welcomes plant-based chef Dreena Burton to the show for a lesson. Dreena has collaborated with Dr. Neal Barnard on a number of projects, including his Cookbook For Reversing Diabetes. Plus, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Chuck revisits an interview with dietician Lee Crosby, R.D., L.D. from an episode titled The Meat-Cancer Connection. For Lee Crosby, R.D., L.D., the connection between meat and cancer hits close to home. The Barnard Medical Center dietician shares her own story of finding a lump in her breast at a young age and turning to a plant-based diet as a result. Following the dietary changes the mass showed no signs of growth. As time passed, she reverted back to the standard American diet only to have the lump quickly grow. The mass was then removed and now she’s now devoted 100 percent to a plant-based diet. The lump has not returned. Lee will also share her delicious top 5 healthy meat substitutes.
