One out of every five children are now obese, according to the latest statistics, while millions of others are overweight and not far behind. Many, including her own mother, believed death would not be far behind.   Ever resilient and unwilling to die, Courtney began the painstaking process of investigating her condition and searching for a cure. Eventually, she stumbled upon research on the benefits of a plant-based diet, including some conducted by The Physicians Committee. Have you ever gone to the doctor and been given this ambiguous prescription for “diet and exercise?” The exercise part seems straight forward, but for many doctors food remains a medical mystery.   That’s a major problem given the fact that poor diet quality has surpassed smoking to become the leading cause of death and disability in the U.S. In fact, 70 percent of all chronic diseases are believed to be linked to diet and lifestyle.   On this episode of The Exam Room Podcast™, Dr. Neal Barnard joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll to explore why doctors don’t know much about diets. Rip Esselstyn has quite the story to tell! After retiring as an elite professional athlete and later hanging up the boots as a firefighter, he devoted his life to inspiring and improving the health of so many people through the plant-based Engine 2 Diet. It’s a program born out of his desire to help a fellow firefighter in desperate need of change.   On this episode of The Exam Room Podcast™, "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll is joined by Rip who shares how his drive to help just one person is now changing the lives of countless others.     If the name Esselstyn seems familiar, you might be thinking of his father, and famed surgeon, Caldwell Esselstyn whose work has been a major influence in the plant-based community.   With a lineage like that, you might think that Rip has been plant-strong from day one, but that’s not the case.
