Also, Chuck is joined by Shivani Sathasivam who is leading the way for healthier eating in the Middle East at just 23 years old. Thyroids and Nutrition: Your Body In Balance
The connection between thyroid health and diet is becoming increasingly clear. In the second part of the “Your Body In Balance” series with Dr. Neal Barnard and “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll, the pair explore the research available on thyroid function and nutrition. Dr. Barnard delves into the differences between hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism and the foods to avoid for each condition. He also tackles the effect dietary change can have on Hashimoto’s and Graves’ disease. Then, Chuck is joined by three people from all different walks of life who overcame their thyroid issues and are featured in the Your Body In Balance book. Dr. Mike Cowan is a neurosurgeon who enjoyed staying active and competing in sports. Mike thought that he was a pillar of health until one day his bloodwork showed an underperforming thyroid. Wendy Sax is a film producer who began gaining weight unexpectedly and noticed that her hair was turning brittle. She experienced dramatic mood swings that often left her with feelings of deep depression while also feeling surges of restless energy. It wasn’t long before doctors diagnosed her with a hyperthyroid. Jeanne Schumacher is a chemistry teacher who also began packing on pounds, but instead of having a jolt of energy, she felt sluggish and was sick all the time. She had become a frequent flyer in the doctor’s office. Her turning point came when she was rushed to the hospital with a 105-degree fever and sky-high blood pressure. Although they lead much different lives, they do have one thing in common, each are now living vibrantly and healthfully following a closer examination of the foods they were eating. Their stories of transformation are amazing! Their stories are just a few of the many featured in Dr. Barnard’s new book, Your Body In Balance, which will be released on February 4. Super Inspiring: The 13-Year-Old Vegan Hero
Josie is just 13 years old but she’s already saving lives and making the world a better place! Before the calendar flips to 2020, this super inspiring teen joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll for a special episode of The Exam Room™ to share her astonishing story. The young vegan spotted a cage on the side of the road. On the outside was a sign reading “Free Bacon.” On the inside was a tiny abandoned pig. Josie knew she didn’t stumble across a meal, she stumbled across a friend whom would soon have a new home and a new name, Franny. Their story has captured the hearts of thousands and now Josie is working tirelessly to help rescue other animals while spreading awareness of the benefits of a plant-based diet. Her efforts are similar to the work being done in Michigan where lawmakers are working to outlaw painful experiments on dogs. Chuck is joined by Kristie Sullivan, Vice President of Research Policy at the Physicians Committee, to get an update on our efforts in the state and where things stand with the groundbreaking legislation. We need your help to continue our work in 2020! From ending animal cruelty to life-saving research for human health to educating thousands of doctors on nutrition, we cannot do this without your support! The 5 Biggest Stories Of 2019
What a year 2019 has been! Evidence showing the link between disease and diet continues to mount, which means that researchers are more confident than ever that key to leading a long and healthy life begins with the food on our plate. On this very special edition of The Exam Room™ podcast, “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll looks back at the five biggest stories on the show from the past year. 5.) The final 365 days of the decade were dominated by questions about the health and complexion of our skin and the foods that help keep us looking young and vibrant. Plant-based dermatologist Dr. Niyati Sharma was kind enough to offer advice on everything from dry skin to wrinkles to acne! 4.) 2019 was also the year of the vegan athlete with the release of The Game Changers documentary. Elite athletes in virtually every major sport are now turning to a plant-based diet to get a leg up on their competition. Everyone from tennis phenom Venus Williams to NBA superstar Kyrie Irving and Formula 1 Racing champion Lewis Hamilton are ditching meat and dairy to take their game to the next level. Dr. Jim Loomis, a former team internist in the NFL and Major League Baseball, joined Chuck to explain what their new diets are doing to give their body a big boost! 3.) The year also saw renewed scrutiny of dairy. It’s been said for decades that milk does a body good, but newly released studies have shown that its effects are doing far more harm than help. Oncology dietitian Alison Tierney joined the show to present data showing rather than promoting healthy teeth and strong bones, the proteins and fat in dairy are actually promoting cancer! 2.) 2019 will soon give way to 2020 and before we know it the calendar will reset to 2021 and then 2022. An undeniable truth is that time marches on and we all grow older. Aging is a natural part of life, but can also be one of the most stressful. Many of us fear memories beginning to fade with time as forgetfulness creeps in and worries of Alzheimer’s disease enter our mind. But Dr. Neal Barnard joined Chuck with powerful research showing that we can give our brains a big boost! All it takes is a willingness to make small changes and eliminate certain foods from our diet and replacing them with major memory enhancing nutrients! Dr. Barnard has the science behind it all! 1.) The most popular show of the year focused on a problem that we all will face at some point in our life, food addiction. What is it about certain food that makes it impossible to put the fork down? Why are we compulsively driven to eat even when we’re not hungry? Dr. Barnard returned for a fascinating conversation with Chuck, a recovering food addict himself, to show exactly how our brains are wired to get hooked on high fat and sugary foods. In fact, the addiction can be so strong that the same medication used to treat opioid overdoses can be used to curb chocolate cravings! — — — Dr. Barnard Chuck will both be speaking at The Kickstart Intensive on January 10-11 in Washington, DC! And these foods often cost more than twice as much as the regular fare! Lee shares everything you need to know about gluten: what it is, what foods have it, who should avoid it, the surprisingly small percentage of the population affected by Celiac disease and gluten sensitivity, and why eliminating it from your diet unnecessarily could actually put your health at risk! Vegan Thanksgiving For Non-Vegans
This is how you have a vegan Thanksgiving for non-vegans! To prove that a big plant-based meal can satisfy even the most macho meat eaters, “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll enjoys a feast with Super Bowl winning running back Ricky Ervins and long-time sports writer Rick Snider. They broke bread together just down the road from the headquarters of Washington’s NFL team and oh what a feast they had! The master chefs at GreenFare Organic Café and Restaurant whipped up all the classics: mashed potatoes, mushroom gravy, stuffing, vegan macaroni and cheese, brightly colored salad, sweet potato pumpkin bars — literally everything but the turkey! For Rick and Ricky, it was a flavorful touchdown and a heck of an education, one that they may pay forward with their families at their own tables this year! Chuck also delves into the science of a plant-based Thanksgiving with dietician Susan Levin. How does the body react differently to a big meal without meat compared to one that serves some? How might a vegan meal help keep you in a better mood and prevent little dustups over dinner? And are you less likely to slip into a food coma after you eat a vegan Thanksgiving dinner? Gregg’s journey to open Fruitive and adopt a plant-based diet is also part of his own health journey. He suffered from frequent and intense migraine headaches. At the suggestion of his wife, he began logging a food journal. As it turns out, Gregg discovered that the fast food and processed food he had been eating was also triggering these crippling episodes. Without that food in his diet, the migraines have subsided greatly! Fruitive has five locations in three cities, including Washington, DC, Virginia Beach, and Norfolk, Virginia. Fighting For Dogs: A Drug Company’s Push To End Animal Testing
A major push is underway to end lab testing on dogs by pharmaceutical companies. On this bonus episode of The Exam Room™, “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll is joined by Elizabeth Baker, pharmaceutical policy program director for the Physicians Committee, who shares the incredible story of Vanda Pharmaceuticals. The biopharmaceutical company is working to end animal testing even at the expense of their bottom line. As you’ll hear, Vanda was ordered by the FDA to test a potential new drug for a stomach disorder on dogs. However, the company’s researchers concluded that the study would not be useful and cause unnecessary animal suffering. Vanda then asked FDA not to require the dog study, which would have taken place after the drug was already being tested in humans. But the FDA pushed back and barred Vanda from continuing with any further trials. Now, Vanda is fighting back! Baker also discusses the modern non-animal testing methods that are faster and more cost-effective in bringing drugs to market. --- --- Donate to PCRM http://bit.ly/donatePCRM --- --- Chuck Carroll Twitter: @ChuckCarrollWLC IG: @ChuckCarrollWLC --- --- Physicians Committee Twitter: @PCRM IG: @PhysiciansCommittee --- --- Share the Show Please subscribe and give the show a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or many other podcast providers.
